To say this is little worrying is a bit of an understatement but the drama unfolding before us is not a completely bleak one. Our stalwart keeper Rune Jarstein has gone a long was to avoiding further misfortune single handed. Although individual errors have resulted in goals being conceded (including against Schalke) the defence on the whole has been stand-ing up well in my opinion. Jordan Torunarigha had a great game against Bayern and the returning Karim Rekik got stuck in quickly on match day 25.
Running through midfield we have Lazarro working his socks off and perhaps in Gelsenkirchen we saw glimpses of Leckie getting his legs back.
Where things are self evidently going wrong is in the final third. Our strikers are suffering a poor run of form and the ball never appears to land sweetly for them. In Gelsenkirchen shots went past the left post, past the right post and even over the bar. Even when chances fall our way like when the ball was cleared to Niklas Stark in front of goal it wasn’t to be.
We can only hope against Freiburg that something will click and Selke will run out like he did against Leipzig or the Vedator, perhaps wearing the mask of Zorro will play the part of a masked superhero scoring at will. It’s a nice thought. I’ll hang on to it for as long as I can.
