Champions League Semi Finals

4/30/2014

Real Madrid go through to the Champions League final as Bayern München were taken apart and loose 4:0 on the night and 5:0 on aggregate. So Pep is not perfect then . . . that's all I have to say about that . . . #schadenfreude

Chelsea however, after scoring the first goal, go 1:3 down at the Bridge and so it's an all Spanish / Madrid final in Lisbon. That's all I've got to say about that as well . . mutter, mutter, mutter.

The first home win of 2014! #Heimsieg

The match against visiting Braunschweig saw Hertha gaining the first home win of the Rückrunde. Two goals, one from John Anthony Brooks and the second from Sami Allagui. A great win but the build up to the match looked pretty spectacular as well. The Choreo looked so cool. You've got to admire the organisation in creating these spectacular events. A couple of pictures thanks to Hertha BSC - sadly I was not at the stadium for this game so they are not mine.

The choreo in all its glory
The video clip below is from Hertha TV and shows the choreo from start to finish - spectacular.

I think I missed the best home game for quite some while with a good result and a great Choreo. These things happen but it makes me look forward to the Dortmund game even more. There's always a great atmosphere at the last game of the season especially if things have gone well! Just to cap it all it will be Eurovision in the evening . . . . . make of that what you will 😉

Bundesliga 31. Spieltag - FC Augsburg

Just four matches to go in the 2013/14 Bundesliga season and Hertha are on 37 points, ten points above the playoff spot. If the "Old Lady" were to be able to get three points away in Augsburg survival would be a certainty no matter what the teams below achieve. That's a bit if a tall order given recent form but I always live in hope.

It appeared, before the match that Fabian Lustenburger was back in the squad for the match which would have been good news for the 26 year old Hertha captain. I was hoping it was good news for Hertha's fans as well! But, unfortunately Fabian hurt himself in warming up and wasn't able to play.

Adrian Ramos is still out but I guess we're going to have to get used to playing without him soon enough so why not now I guess. It gives a chance for Sami and Sandro to show us what they can do.

Well the match ended in a 0:0 draw. Hertha only had 43% of the possession but but managed a total of thirteen shots (three more than FC Augsburg) but none found their way into the back of the net. The woodwork played a part in all of this but our strikers just couldn't finish it off.

Hertha did pick up an away point and, with Hoffenheim losing on the same day, crept ever so slightly closer to 9th place in the table.

The bottom of the table is perhaps starting to shape now. Braunschweig lost 0:2 to Bayern and in a key match for both sides the HSV dinosaurs went down 1:3 to Wolfsburg leaving them rooted in that playoff spot. Stuttgart and Nürnberg play on Easter Sunday against Schalke and Leverkusen respectively. A win for Stuttgart could lift them out of trouble but a loss, with a win for Nürnberg, and they could be cast into the pit!

As it turned out Nurnberg, perhaps not unexpectedly, did not win and went down 1:4 against Leverkusen and are starting to look doomed.  Stuttgart winning at home against Schalke lifts them four points clear of the playoff spot with just nine points to play for.

The loss at Nürnberg makes it a mathematical certainty that the Old Lady will be playing Bundesliga football next season.  Ha Ho He !

Bayer Leverkusen

With just five games to play in the 2013/14 Bundesliga season Hertha travel to Leverkusen in the hope of picking up points to bolster their mid table position. It's not going to be easy as the Old Lady is missing a few key players. It looks like Fabian Lustenberger is still out of the squad and, for this match at least, he will be joined by Adrian Ramos who injured his thigh in the match against Hoffenheim. On top of this both Jay Brooks and Hany Mukhtar didn't make the squad for Sunday's match. Kobi and Peter Niemeyer are on the coach so they'll probably get a run out at some point at least. I always like seeing Peter getting a game. He works so hard and he comes across a decent sort of bloke from what I have seen of him.

In terms of match history between the two clubs things could be worse for the "Old Lady". She has only lost one of the last seven games in Leverkusen and has had a four games unbeaten run away at Bayer. Jos Luhukay on the other hand has not faired so well. He has met Leverkusen five times as both a player and a coach and he has lost all five. Let's hope we have the luck of the Old Lady this week!

Sadly I'll not be able to see this match live so I'll have to make do with my phone again. Hey, it's better than nothing!

Well, Hertha brought home no points after a 2:1 loss away in Leverkusen. I didn't sound good when I heard Stefan Kießling Scored in the first minute! We then went 2:0 down 23 minutes later. Some face was saved when Sandro Wagner pulled one back with a header in the 38th minute.

So, in the end, it appears we had to content ourselves with the luck of Jos Luhukay against Bayer Leverkusen but we live on to fight another day.

Hoffenheim at home.

Yet another visitor arrives at the Olympiastadion this weekend as Hoffenheim test Hertha's poor home form in the Rückrunde. I don't want to think about that form. Sadly, these days I only seam to go to the stadium to see Hertha draw at best. Having said this, "hope springs eternal" and there is always the next match!

All sorts of stuff has popped up in the press this week. Apparently Ramos has been sold to Dortmund for €10 million - again! No confirmation from either club so it's best not to take that one too seriously! Also it has been reported that Sebastian Langkamp hurt his shoulder in the Schalke match but scans show it's not too bad and he may still play over the weekend.!

I'm in Berlin for a very long weekend and will naturally be going to the match. I'm hoping the weather will be kind to us over the weekend but there were a few showers on Friday, we'll see.
Friday evening saw 29. Spieltag starting with a bit of a bombshell with Hamburg SV beating Leverkusen at home and giving their home fans a glimmer of hope.

Temporarily at least, they are now out of the drop zone which leaves the bottom of the table on a knife edge. Some key relegation matches coming up thus weekend - notably the one where VfB Stuttgart host SC Freiburg and Eintracht Braunschweig meet Hannover 96.   Wins for Stuttgart and Braunschweig could see the bottom of the table getting even tighter - and, as it turns out, that's exactly what happened!

With Hertha it's not going to be easy. Hoffenheim may be made of plastic but they have three players that have scored over ten goals. As has been said many times Hertha are perhaps too dependant on goals either scored by or made by Adrian Ramos. The next most prolific scorer being Sami Allagui on seven goals or, if you prefer, 0.25 goals per game. If we are to end this season with a flourish our midfield will need to step up and be far more clinical in front of the goal as well as our defense start plugging those gaps. Simple . . . ( I wish!)

After the match.  What a glorious afternoon / evening it turned out to be for the match. Sitting on the grass beside the stadium in the blazing late afternoon sunshine - superb!

Picture

That match itself was a nerve wracking business ending in a 1:1 draw. Goals from first Sami Allagui and then, sadly, from Eugen Polanski for Hoffenheim.

The TSG keeper was carried of with what later was diagnosed with a broken shin bone after clattering into Adrian Ramos just outside the box. Adrian had an MRI on Monday which showed he had developed a "haemotoma" in his thigh muscle which I gather is better than the torn muscle they originally thought he had.

The last kick of the game in injury time was a bolt of a shot from Hoffenheim matched by a cracking save from Thomas Kraft. What a player he is for Hertha - top notch! Here are some of his thoughts on the Bundesliga site - "We had chances to win it"

Well point more point to the total and creeping towards the end of the season. Ten points clear of the drop zone with 15 points to play for. . . the next match I'll attend will be the end of the season sell out against Dortmund . . bring it on!

A few photos from the match . . .
